How to Get a Turmeric Stain Out

As a favorite household cleaner, Charlie’s Soap has been called upon to treat the most difficult of stains. Yet, certain stains seem to give people more trouble than others. Of these, Charlie’s Soap gets a lot of inquiries about cleaning clothes and fabrics stained by turmeric.

Turmeric is a yellow spice that is commonly used in Indian food. The staining power of turmeric is so strong that it can even leave blemishes on dishes and countertops. Even more, turmeric is capable of temporarily staining your skin when you handle it. Due to these characteristics, turmeric is sometimes used as a yellow dye.

While many of us love the flavor of this spice, it can’t be denied that turmeric stains are a real pain.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is responsible for Indian giving foods like curry their yellow color. Turmeric has long been used as a spice, dye, as well as medicine.

Turmeric is sourced from the roots of the curuma longa plant that grows in Southeast Asia. Curuma longa is in the same family as the ginger plant. Turmeric has been used by people since ancient times for a variety of applications.

Today, many people feel that turmeric is a natural remedy for ailments such as pain and inflammation. Therefore, turmeric is a popular item among natural wellness enthusiasts. However, medical evidence backing the views that turmeric is an effective medicine remains sparse to this day.

Turmeric is a popular natural dye. Besides using it to dye clothing, people also use turmeric to color certain foods like cake, frosting, and butter. People even use turmeric to dye their hair!

Why is Turmeric Hard to Wash from Clothes?

The compound “curcumin” is the reason that turmeric is so difficult to wash out of clothing. Because curcumin is not water-soluble, water cannot penetrate turmeric stains to break down their connection with fabric. As such, water seems to just rinse away from turmeric stains, instead of working curcumin out of your clothing.

If you have ever used turmeric in the kitchen or elsewhere, you have likely experienced how difficult it can be to wash these stains.

One of the reasons that turmeric is so challenging for people is that they choose the wrong method for cleaning these stains. If you get turmeric on your favorite shirt, don’t start vigorously scrubbing the stain with hot water – this will only make it worse.

Tips for Cleaning Turmeric Stains

There are a few specific steps you should take to get turmeric stains out of your clothing. Whatever steps you choose to clean your clothes, just remember that patience is key!

Start with dabbing the turmeric stain with cold water and laundry detergent. Again, avoid hot water and scrubbing, as they will only make the turmeric stain worse.

After you have dabbed the clothing, soak it in a mild bleach and cold water mixture. If you are hesitant to use bleach, you can also use a gentle laundry detergent mixture. For this, we recommend a natural detergent like Charlie’s Soap.

Let the turmeric-stained clothing soak in the cold water mixture for at least 30 minutes. Depending on how bad the stain is, you might have to let it soak longer. If you have to soak your clothes for a long time, be sure to keep an eye on them so the overall color doesn’t suffer.

Once your garment is finished soaking, wash it using the cold cycle with a high-quality laundry detergent

Please bear in mind, you might have to repeat these steps several times to get your clothing clean.
