How to Clean Your Robot Vacuum: A Step-by-Step Guide

Mar 26, 2024 | Blog, How To | 0 comments

Automated cleaning is here, and it can be a serious time-saver. Robot vacuums are officially changing the game. You just press a button, put your feet up, and relax as it does your cleaning for you.  Constant clean floors in a convenient disk? It doesn’t get better than that.

This little live-in helper is the perfect way to shorten your to-do list, but it’s not completely hands-free. We have yet to automate the cleaning of the automated cleaning solutions. To keep your robot vacuum in good shape, committing to some regular maintenance is important—and that means cleaning. By taking a bit of time to clean out your vacuum, you’ll extend its life and keep it working at its best. Robot vacuums are compact, and they include materials, parts, and mechanisms that are different from those of standard vacuums. That means they do require a little special care. For best results, it’s a good idea to give your vacuum a deep-clean about once every month.

If it’s your first time cleaning your vacuum, no stress. Charlie’s Soap has your back. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your robot vacuum as good as new.

1. Tackle the Dust Bin and the Air Filter

Like a standard vacuum, it’s important to clear out the dirt, dust, and other debris. When the dust bin in your robot vacuum gets too full, it can block air circulation, which can seriously reduce its cleaning power. Since robot vacuums are so compact, their dust bin is much smaller than a standard vacuum. Depending on your use, you may want to empty the dustbin anywhere from once a day to once a week.

Locate the dustbin—for many robot vacuum models, it will be underneath the top cover or on the side. Remove the dustbin, open its release, and empty its contents into a garbage can. To clean out lingering dust, rinse the inside of the dusty bin thoroughly, then spray the inside with Charlie’s Soap Indoor & Outdoor surface spray. Our gentle cleaning will effectively remove residual pollen, dust, and dirt. Wash the inside with a cleaning rag, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to dry completely.

Next, you’re ready to tackle the air filters. Like dust bins, air filters can get clogged with dust and debris. Luckily, they’re easy to clean. Remove the air filters and dislodge the debris over a garbage can. Then, clean away the remaining dust using a soft-bristle brush or a dry rag. For robot vacuums, you’ll want to avoid using water to clean the air filters. Most robot vacuum filters are paper-based, so they’ll be damaged by water exposure.

Once the dust bin has dried and the air filter is clean, lock them back into place in your vacuum.

2. Deep-Clean the Brushes

Most robot vacuums have at least three brushes: one roller brush on the bottom and two smaller brushes on the side. These brushes bear the brunt of wear and tear and have the greatest exposure to germs, residue, and mildew that may be lingering on your carpet. Gunk and grime can quickly build up in the brushes and in the surrounding mechanisms.

Start by unhinging the brush guard on the bottom and remove the roller brush. Then, remove the side brushes—depending on your model, you may be able to pop these brushes off of the bottom. Using a pair of scissors, cut off anything that is tangled around the roller brush, such as hair or string.

Next, it’s time to give the brushes a deep clean. Fill a sink or large bucket with warm water, and add as little as one teaspoon of our 1001 Degreaser. Our water-based degreaser is gentle enough not to damage the brush material. At the same time, it’s packed with natural cleaning power and is perfect for tearing through built-up residue and grime.

Allow the brushes to soak in the cleaning solution for several minutes. Then, using your hands, comb through the bristles on the brush. Be sure to focus on the root of the bristles, where build-up is most common. After the brushes are clean, rinse them and give them plenty of time to air dry before re-attaching them to the robot vacuum.

3. Give It a Final Wipe-Down

Finally, you’re ready to give your robot a once-over with a cloth. Gently clean the bottom, top, and sides. Be sure to clean the sensors, which are located on the bottom and the sides. Since sensors are sensitive to even the gentlest cleaners, it’s best to stick with a damp cleaning rag.

That’s it! After you’ve polished up your robot vacuum, you’re good to set it back to work.
