How to Prevent and Remove Salt Stains This Winter

Jan 29, 2024 | Blog, How To | 0 comments

As one of the oldest tricks in the cold-weather arsenal, salt abounds during the winter months. From the first to the final snow, salt is generously added to sidewalks and roads. While it does help reduce slippery ice, salt can stick to your clothes and shoes—often tracking straight into your home. Winter salt can leave behind a white residue that sets into a stain.

Not to worry. Charlie’s Soap has your back. Here’s everything you need to know about preventing and removing salt stains this winter.

Preventing Daily Salt Stains

Since salt stains can prove painful to remove and even damaging to certain materials, it’s best to catch them before they set. In particular, salt can cling to the bottom of your winter footwear. From your shoes, it tends to track into your homes, leaving you with a salty residue on your floors and carpets. Here are some expert tips for preventing salt stains on your clothes and in your home.

Remove and Rinse Winter Footwear

Immediately after coming in from the cold, take some time to remove your shoes and rinse them with cool water. This proactive step will remove built-on salt residue before it can stain.

Use Door Mats

Thoroughly cleaning your shoes on a doormat will knock off the majority of the salt and snow. If you pick this up as a regular practice, you can reduce the salty mess that makes its way onto your floors.

Vacuum and Mop Regularly

Increase the frequency of your vacuuming and mopping during snowy and cold winter months. A more regular floor cleaning schedule will make sure any salt brought inside is taken care of before it builds up and causes stains.

Removing Salt Stains

After salt has had a chance to break down, its white residue can stubbornly cling to your clothes and household surfaces. Though salt stains can be a pain, don’t stress—with the right products, you’ll have them out in a jiffy.

How to Clean Salt from Carpets

Carpets tend to be on the front lines for salt stains. After simply walking down the driveway, your winter boots are covered in a thin film of salt that transfers easily to your carpets and rugs. Here are a few quick steps for getting salt out of your carpets.

Vacuum Loose Salt

To lift as much dry residue as possible, begin by vacuuming the affected area.  If possible, it’s best to use a brush attachment to penetrate the fibers of the carpet deeply. After you’ve vacuumed the area thoroughly, it’s time to hit the remaining residue with a powerful cleaner.

Tackle Lingering Stains

When it comes to cleaning carpets, choosing the right product is key. Delicate fibers in carpets can be damaged by harsh cleaners. Caustic chemicals can lead to discoloration or permanent damage to the fabric fibers. That’s why our personal favorite for all things carpet cleaning is Charlie’s Soap non-chlorine oxygen bleach. Our oxygen bleach has all of the cleaning power of chlorine bleach without the toxic additives. It’s packed with gentle cleaning power to tackle tough stains without harming even the most delicate materials—including your carpet fibers.

To lift the salt stain:

  • Mix 1 tbsp of Charlie’s Soap oxygen bleach with a spray bottle of warm water.
  • Apply the mixture thoroughly to the residue and let it sit for five minutes.
  • Carefully blot the moisture away using a clean cloth. While you blot, you should see the white residue begin to lift.
  • Keep the area well-ventilated, allow it to air-dry completely, and say goodbye to salty and stiff carpets.

How to Clean Salt from Clothes and Shoes

Clothes and shoes tend to take the brunt of salt stains. Luckily, Charlie’s has your back. For washable items, removing salt stains is a breeze.

Machine-Washable Items

For washable clothes and shoes, toss them in the laundry and add one of Charlie’s powerful laundry detergents. For extra cleaning power, add half a scoop of our oxygen bleach. While Charlie’s Soap oxygen bleach is color- and fabric-safe, always be sure to follow garment care instructions.

Hand-Washing Shoes

Many shoes are not machine washable. No stress—you’ll simply want to hand-wash them with Charlie’s powerful detergents.

  • Start by adding a full dose of Charlie’s powder or liquid detergent into a sink, bucket, or tub of water.
  • Using your hands or a soft brush, gently scrub the shoes, targeting areas with salt stains.
  • After the shoes have been washed, rinse them thoroughly.
  • Once they’ve air-dried, you can enjoy completely salt-free and deeply clean winter footwear.
