Alongside giant teddy bears, cards, and candles, chocolate is a go-to gift for Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, chocolate stains are also notoriously difficult to remove—and they spread quickly. After popping open a heart-shaped box of treats, you may find chocolate inexplicably everywhere.
Don’t let post-Valentine’s cleanup get you down. Charlie’s Soap has got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about removing chocolate stains from clothing to carpets.
Remove Chocolate Stains from Clothing
There’s nothing like getting all dressed up for Valentine’s Day—until an undetected smear of chocolate ends up on the hem of your new jacket. But don’t panic—here’s a foolproof method for removing chocolate from even the most delicate fabrics.
Start by rinsing away as much chocolate residue as you can. If you catch the stain while it’s still fresh, use a damp cloth or paper towel to gently blot the stained area. Once you’ve removed the excess chocolate, tackle the remaining stain with a powerful stain fighter.
Our favorite stain-fighting pretreatment is Charlie’s Biodegradable Laundry Pre-Spray Stain Remover. This eco-friendly pretreatment is designed to take on the most resilient stains. Yep, even chocolate. Spray the stained area and allow the treatment to sit for 30 minutes. Then, once the pre-spray has had a chance to work its magic, wash the stained clothing according to garment care instructions and air dry.
Remove Chocolate Stains from Upholstery
Upholstery is notoriously difficult to treat. During cleaning, chocolate has a tendency to spread. A small chocolate stain quickly grows into a splotchy brown statement piece on your white loveseat cushion. Removing upholstery stains requires a little bit of finesse and some serious cleaning power.
Start by dabbing the stained area with a damp cloth or paper towel. If the chocolate has hardened, try scraping the excess away with a butter knife. You’ll want to be careful for this step; scrubbing or scraping can scratch some sensitive upholstery. After you’ve lifted as much of the chocolate as possible, it’s time to flush the remaining stain with a powerful cleaning agent. Charlie’s Soap 1001 Degreaser is an ultra-powerful, multipurpose cleaner ideal for taking on the toughest stains. At the same time, our water-based degreaser is gentle on delicate fabrics, making it perfect for treating upholstery.
Simply dilute a few drops of our 1001 Degreaser into a spray bottle of cool water. Spray the area with the stain solution. Be sure to saturate the stain thoroughly. Using a microfiber cloth, gently dab at the area. You should slowly see the stain beginning to lift from the upholstery. Once the stain has lifted completely, rinse the area with clean water and let it air dry.
Remove Chocolate Stains from Carpets
Like garments and upholstery, caring for carpet stains is all about finding a potent cleaner that won’t compromise the integrity of the material. The right cleaner, combined with a little technique, will make chocolate carpet stains a thing of the past.
Removing excess chocolate may be more difficult, depending on the texture of the carpet. Thicker carpets with longer fibers may require extra time and elbow grease. Our recommendation? Keep it simple. Scrape the area gently with a butter knife, removing as much of the surface stain as you can. Then, dab the area repeatedly using a cloth and clean, cool water. Take some extra time dabbing—the more excess chocolate is removed, the more effective the stain solution will be.
For carpet fibers, you need a cleaner that penetrates deep into fabric fibers without causing discoloration or deterioration. You may feel tempted to douse the area with chlorine bleach, but this is risky. Filled with caustic chemicals and artificial additives, traditional bleach can permanently discolor your carpet—and even dissolve some of the fabric fibers. Charlie’s Soap oxygen bleach is the perfect alternative. Free of toxic additives and optical brighteners, our chlorine-free bleach is tough on stains and gentle on fabrics. That’s right—you can even use our oxygen bleach to deep clean your carpet.
Just add a scoop of Charlie’s oxygen bleach to a bucket of cool water and mix until it’s dissolved completely. Dab the stained area with the cleaning mixture. The chocolate should steadily lift from the carpet until it disappears. When no trace of stain remains, rinse the area with clean water and allow it to air dry completely. Just like that, your carpet is as good as new.
