Why Charlie’s Soap is Safe for Sensitive Skin

At Charlie’s Soap, our motivations for developing all-natural cleaning products are multi-faceted. We created Charlie’s Soap products to be effective cleaners, good for the environment, and safe for sensitive skin.

Notably, most detergents on the market today are laden with additives that can seriously irritate your skin – even if you don’t suffer from dermatitis. Whether it be from perfumes, brighteners, or even softeners, such chemicals can cause rashes and other outbreaks.

As Charlie’s Soap Natural Laundry Detergent focuses simply on getting garments clean, we don’t use the harsh chemicals and additives found in other leading brand products.

The Detergent Industry’s Dirty Secret

The laundry detergent industry can be a bit misleading when describing how products work to get your clothes clean. Many detergents are engineered to give the appearance of cleanliness without actually getting all the dirt out of your clothes.

Many detergent manufacturers use chemical softeners and artificial perfumes to make your clothes feel soft and smell good. But in fact, the same pieces of clothes are still harboring much of the grime they did before washing! The softeners and perfumes simply mask the dirt.

Every time you wash an article of clothing with low-quality detergents, chemicals continue to build up in the fabrics. When enough of these additives amass in your clothes, they can irritate your skin. This notion is particularly true for people who suffer from allergies or dermatitis.

Artificial perfumes in laundry detergents are one of the biggest causes of skin irritations. Unfortunately, many detergents are made with so many different additives that people don’t understand what is in them. As such, it can be challenging to make an educated decision on precisely what compounds you are choosing to expose to your skin.

Common “fragrance substances” in detergents known to cause skin irritations include:

  • Limonene
  • Linalool
  • Hexyl cinnamal
  • Butylphenyl methylpropional
  • Citronellol

Many laundry detergents use a combination of these fragrance substances to create artificial perfume scents. In many cases, they can be severe skin irritants.

Brighteners & Dyes

Brighteners and dyes are also significant contributors to detergent-related rashes and outbreaks. When it comes to manufacturing laundry detergents, the terms “brighteners” and “dyes” are often used to describe the same thing.

Optical brightening agents (OBAs) are dyed blue to cause an optical illusion in clothing. In turn, these dyes make clothes appear brighter than they are. In the laundry detergent industry, this practice is known as “bluing.”

According to the JW Textiles, when you wash clothing with a blue detergent, “a very light blue tint on a white piece of fabric will emit more visible light than that which shines on it, making it appear brighter.”

Studies conducted by the North American Dermatitis Group found a correlation between allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and chemical brighteners in detergents.

Taken on its own, phosphorus is a compound found abundantly in the natural world. Phosphorus is considered a “macronutrient” essential for the health of plants, animals, and humans alike.

Manufacturers have also developed synthetic phosphates for various products, including laundry detergents. Laundry detergent manufacturers often used phosphates to help soften hard water during the washing process. In turn, this softer water is believed to clean clothes more effectively than hard water.

A commonly used type of phosphate that poses a danger to the skin is white phosphorus. While it is considered toxic by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), trace amounts of white phosphate are used in many cleaners and detergents.
